Whataburger App

Wanting to modernize their business, Whataburger decided to offer online ordering for the first time. Known for their customer service, quality of food, and encouragement of customization, we were challenged to build an app that replicated that experience. Combining a thoughtful user experience, food ordering that lets you adjust almost anything, and technology that makes sure an order is hot and ready has made the app incredibly successful.

PRIMARY PAGES

Home

The app plays a key part in the ordering process, delivering status notifications, and finally being used as identification for order pickup. The home screen had to be adaptable to each stage of the experience as well as showcase products before an order had been placed.

Menu

The menu experience continually updated from breakfast to lunch/dinner to late-night offerings (most restaurants operate 24 hours a day).

Customization

Whataburger’s “Just Like You Like It” ethos translated to the app with robust customization options.

Rewards

The app experience opened new opportunities for loyalty programs.

PROCESS

Wireframes

Online ordering was a huge logistics change for a company of this size. Uncovering huge obstacles and finding solutions was a regular part of this process. Both low- and high-fidelity wireframes allowed us to be nimble in solving problems without blowing up budgets and deadlines.

User Flow: Order Status

Whatabuger didn’t want customers picking up a cold order, so a messaging system was built around certain stages of the process. Additionally, geofencing aligned to the customer’s location was used to know when to start preparing an order.

User Flow: Reorder

The app environment allowed us to introduce new experiences such as building a library of orders customers could use to quickly reorder items.

RESPONSIBILITES

Project Lead, UX/UI Designer

Led a mid-size team through the design process and launch. Because of the incredible implications for a restaurant’s logistics, the client came to us with some of the strategic planning in place. We worked together to make sure these ideas were viable or worked quickly to develop new solutions. Luckily, the client was a great partner and willing to work toward creating the best user experience. Client communication was as vital to this project as the design.
